pd|hub’s Cynthia Fuhrmann was invited to serve as a panelist at the recent National Academies event, Reimagining STEMM Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Career Development: A Summit, held July 22-23 in Washington, D.C. Sessions explored changing the nature of mentorship, expanding awareness of career pathways, redesigning the postdoctoral position, and evolving the role of industry with respect to ensuring a robust U.S. research talent base.
Dr. Fuhrmann participated in a panel titled, “What if We Consciously Prepared Early Career Scholars for a Variety of Careers?”, moderated by Emily Miller, Vice President of Research and Institutional Policy at the Association of American Universities and a member of the pd|hub Coalition of Higher Education Organizations. Dr. Miller opened the panel with a brief history of how support for Ph.D. career development has evolved over the past decades, positioning the panel to discuss the future. Fellow panelists included: Ashley Moses, Ph.D. Student and Founder of PhD Paths - Stanford University; Roman Holowinsky, Associate Professor of Mathematics (on leave) - The Ohio State University; Managing Director and Cofounder - The Erdos Institute; and Phil Trella, Associate Vice Provost and Director of the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs - University of Virginia.
The primary goal of the Summit was to identify key levers and actions needed to sustain the U.S. STEMM research enterprise while continuing to support, engage, and promote the success of graduate students and postdoctoral scholars across a variety of career paths.
Recordings, materials, and commissioned papers are now available here, including a Proceedings of the Summit published by the National Academies. Full details.
